Acoustics
Source of Noise
From the supporting literature, there is a relationship between students performance and behavior, classroom and community noise. The maximum unoccupied background noise in a classroom should be 35 dB and reverberation range of 0.6-0.7 sec. Student achievements are negatively affected by high noise level from inside and outside of classrooms. High-level classroom noise affects students attention strategies, the feeling of personal control and safety, and blood pressure.
Occupancy Type
From the supporting literature, classroom background noise also comes from various activities that are carried out inside and outside the classroom. These activities include conversations, playing, movement, attendance, and lunch, entering the classroom, giving instructions by the teachers, and interactions among students and teachers.
Acoustic Extra Features
From the supporting literature, the school building’s envelope impacts the acoustic comfort of classrooms. The choice of materials for classroom walls and floors and their treatment plays a role in determining classroom acoustic comfort. The regularity of maintenance may depend on the building material used but it is important that classrooms/school building be properly maintained for optimum acoustic, thermal and lighting performance.
