About Mackenzie Heaney
As the Professional Learning Facilitator for GEAR UP the METRO, Kenzie collaborates with a team to design and deliver impactful professional development to secondary teachers across 16 diverse schools in the greater OKC metro area of Oklahoma.
Kenzie holds a B.M. in Music Education and spent five years directing choir and musical theater at middle schools in Macon, GA and Raleigh, NC. Now a doctoral candidate at the University of Oklahoma, her research examines equity and identity in music education, with a focus on teacher burnout, professional identity formation, and the experiences of choral educators in urban school settings. Her co-authored study on equity among women in collegiate choral conducting was published in the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing (2026), and a book review appeared in the Music Educators Journal (2025).
