About Delma Porter, Ph.D.

When Delma was in the second grade, she knew she wanted to be an English teacher. Her younger sister loved my reading stories to her every day, and eventually her sister learned to read long before she started school. Delma thought that process was amazing — imagine teaching other people to read. She taught high school English for ten years and loved every minute of it, even those minutes when my urban (and later rural) students objected strongly to Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Hawthorne. Somewhere along the line, she decided she could make a more significant contribution if she went back to school and got a graduate degree so I could teach teachers. And since she loved being a student, she got both a Master’s and a PhD and spent the remaining years of her career teaching her own students as a university professor and as a pre-service trainer for K-12 teachers. Delma worked closely with school districts my entire career providing in-service training on many ELA topics. She retired to take care of my husband, and when he passed away, she realized she needed to continue my work in some way. It was truly serendipity to be hired as a part of the K20 initiative. What better way to assist teachers than assist in lesson preparation.
