Paper Trail is an engaging method for students to improve their ability to identify the three primary ethical frameworks of Consequentialist, Deontological, and Virtue theory; while also distinguishing where they fall within those frameworks. Students are challenged to make ethical decisions while maintaining integrity within their chosen framework. As a secondary goal, students will improve their ability to recognize both appeal to authority and framing bias.
Students take on the role of an accountability officer at a large corporation that manufactures and sells personal protective gear and industrial safety equipment to energy companies. As students work their way through the game, they are faced with a variety of situations where they must make choices with ethical ramifications. Their goal is to make choices consistent with their chosen ethical framework, while avoiding bias.
