Dear GEAR UP:

GEAR UP for SUCCESS introduces students and their parents to campus life through summer experiences such as College Forums at colleges and universities throughout the state. Students bring a parent and together they experience dorm life during an overnight college campus visit. Parent Brenda Cooke (pictured at right, far left) wrote GEAR UP a letter after she and her daughter Sierra (pictured at right, fourth from left), a sophomore at Smithville High School, participated in a College Forum last June at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Read more of her letter.

Oklahoma Earthquake Awareness

GEAR UP for SUCCESS students on the University of Oklahoma campus last June couldn't know how timely the public service announcement would be in Oklahoma.  Students learned to develop and produce the PSA with Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and Gaylord Family Endowed Professor Scott Hodgson.  Watch one of the public service announcements.

About GEAR UP for SUCCESS

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federal grant program designed to increase the number of cohort students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.  The K20 Center’s GEAR UP grant is a partnership project that requires public schools, higher education, communities and business organizations to work together to provide students and their families a range of support services needed to prepare for college. It is truly a collaborative effort to provide a solid framework for students from 32 Oklahoma schools to succeed in school and life. GEAR UP staff work with the cohort students beginning in seventh grade and progress with them as they move through middle school, high school and the requirements for postsecondary education. The K20 Center GEAR UP staff  provides professional development and technology through its innovative education model, working in depth with school leaders, teachers, parents and students.

School leaders and teachers participate in research-based professional development experiences designed to strengthen educational programs for all students. Efforts are focused on increasing and sustaining the educational organization's capacity to provide authentic learning experiences for students within a technology-rich environment.
